Every news organization should be able to answer the question: “Does our journalism accurately reflect the communities we serve?” and if not, what are we doing about it? Historically, we know that disproportionately white newsrooms and the journalism they produce have not been inclusive of Black, Latino, Hispanic, Indigenous communities and other marginalized groups. To this end, we know we have to develop better systems to keep track of whose voices and perspectives we’re elevating.
The first part of this project is building a source diversity tracking tool with Chalkbeat that will be accessible, easy to use and free for all newsrooms who want to utilize it. We have done the research and are now in the development phase of the tool going into Fall 2021.
The second phase of this project will be building a training / workshop that newsrooms can utilize to help them not only use the tool effectively, but institute real structural change in their workflows and newsroom culture to integrate solutions that will help them include more diverse and equitable range of voices into their coverage.
