In 2018, I founded the Women in Journalism Workshop which is a workshop built to provide resources, training and discussions around issues specific to women in the journalism industry. We teach self-care, HEAT training, data skills, game building, how to advocate for yourself (and fair pay!) among other sessions. Every year I add new/different sessions to tackle current challenges women face in our industry.
I strive to keep it accessible by keeping costs low for attendees, providing two meals a day and providing scholarships for travel and registration. I believe that access to training and opportunities is a huge barrier in journalism – a lot of workshops/training/resources are expensive and therefore only accessible to those with generational wealth or company support. I try to close that gap by providing these resources and trainings as close to free as possible.
