Innovation Competition

The RJI Student Innovation Competition is an annual competition where students work together in teams to tackle a journalism challenge. When I took over the competition in 2019, I restructured it to streamline the process and made it national. This has more than doubled our entries from teams across the country who compete to implement innovative ideas in their local communities and newsrooms to help solve challenges for journalism.

In 2020 the teams developed verification tools to battle Deepfakes. Our winning team Deeptector went on to compete in the Microsoft World Championships. Here is their presentation.

In 2021, our first year with a completely remote competition, teams nationwide worked with their local newsrooms to tackle projects that engaged the community in new ways. Our ten finalist teams had 3 months to implement their ideas with a local newsroom of their choice. Their projects ranged from collaborative murals to digital tools and published zines.
