While in Cuba I was exposed to two extremes in dance performance, one night was the Tropicana and the next day was the teatro nacional de Cuba. Tropicana was everything and nothing like I expected. In addition to the typical flashy outfits and body shaking dance moves, there was acrobatics, singing and a variety of costumes different enough to make your head spin. There were some impressive feats and some good singers in addition to the downright tacky las vegas style outfits.

In contrast, the next day I watched a class at teatro nacional de Cuba. This was all controlled movement and grace, really impressive and moving. It was in a dark studio with sun beams trailing across the floor as they their dance moves progressed from slow muscle stretches to leaps and spins all the way across the room. Here’s a couple shots from each.
